Freehand Drawing course is based on perception of objects in indoor or outdoor space, and representation of them by freehand drawing. It is emphasized to understand the nature of natural and man-made objects under the factors such as volume, proportion, light, shadow; and to be able to visualize artistic and figurative expressions of their patterns and textures. The course focuses on the structural properties of objects, geometric forms of different sizes, progressively, with emphasis on strengthening the relationship between eye-brain-hand. It shows students how to use the basic drawing principles such as drawing line, composition and perspective. Besides basic information, students will become familiar with a variety of tools and materials. It is intended to develop free-hand drawing techniques by using lead pencil.

Basic Design for Interior Space Design Associate Department Studio I introduces the elements of basic design such as point, line, plane, and volume to the students. It also includes design principles such as Gestalt principles; abstraction; introduction to principles of composition; expansion; analogy; metaphor; balance; contrast; emphasis; proportion; rhythm; unity and variety. Colors in composition; focal point; position; repetition; sequence; radiation; sense of direction are also studied. The aim of the course is to motivate creativity, hand-eye coordination and artistic perception by focusing on the basics of design elements and design principles. After the completion of this course, the student will be able to understand and apply basic design principles in design process and able to develop solutions to basic design problems of interior architecture.

The course aims to equip interior space design associate department students with basic drafting techniques in various scales. This includes introduction to drawing equipment, lettering, line types, orthographic projections (plans, elevations and sections) of basic geometrical forms; drawing of interior design plans, sections, elevations, details, and their dimensioning. The knowledge gained in this course helps interior space design associate students communicate their design ideas through various drafting techniques and scales such as site plan and sections, 1/50 and 1/20 presentation drawings where building elements such as doors, windows, staircase drawings, details of sanitary and kitchen equipment shall be included in 1/10, 1/5, 1/2 scales. The students will gain the ability to improve different drawing techniques with different materials (pencil, ink, rapid) and be capable to make models of various forms.

This course for interior space design associate department students analyzes the human factors, anthropometric data and their impacts on broad aspects of design development. Subjects include systems reliability, sensory and motor processes, basic research techniques and anthropometric studies. It explores ergonomic standards, universal design principles and their application. It aims to introduce static and dynamic dimensions of human body; to develop of the knowledge and awareness of the students about the significance of anthropometry and to improve their ability of applying anthropometric data effectively on design projects. It involves the interference of the human body with the physical components of some of the prototypical interior spaces in which people live, work and entertain.

This course for interior space design associate department students is an introduction to trigonometry and analytic geometry in two and three dimensions. It is projected for design students to refresh their knowledge on elementary geometry, geometric configuration study, properties of geometric shapes and forms, geometric construction and to apply this knowledge in design process. It includes equations of lines, planes and volumes, equations of circles and conic sections; resolution of triangles; quadratic surfaces; polar coordinates and gridal systems. It also offers the subjects of dimension, proportion, scale and golden section. It aims to improve the knowledge of the students about the relation of geometric shapes and forms, ability of geometric analysis of designing objects and realization of composition.

GSTM104 RENDERING AND PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES 3 2 2 3
Rendering and Presentation Technics course aims to build confidence in the observation, sketching and drawing ability of students through the introduction of various rendering and presentation techniques. In this course students are expected to clearly express their ideas and concepts in architectural design project. Within this scope, the students will be introduced to various media such as coloured pencils, markers, watercolour pencils, watercolour etc. and will be encouraged to exercise with different techniques like shading, slinky, smooth/blending and cross-hatching; provide value, tone and contrast, as well as shade and shadow to enhance the geometric form of an object and overall sense or impression of a project. In this course students shall be guided on issues such as effectively rendering different textures.

Basic Design for Interior Space Design Associate Department Studio II course focuses on the composition of forms and interior spaces with the emphasis on their visual expression by considering the conditions of physical environment; space defining elements, thresholds; horizontal and vertical circulation in building and room scales such as stair and ramp design. The abstract and/or real concepts in spatial design process are introduced. The course includes the effects of climate in interior design. The aim of the course covers to create interior spaces for various scales and functions by using basic design elements and principles. The students will learn basics of design through Euclidean and post Euclidean geometry. The course also focuses ergonomics and organisation of space emphasizing the formal, functional and physical characteristics of interior space.

The aim of the course is to help the interior space design associate department students for developing their visual and graphical communication skills. This course helps the students to create views of three dimensional objects and to represent architectural and interior architectural projects graphically. After completion of this course the students will understand different scales and drawing techniques and they can improve different drawing techniques with different materials. Different rendering techniques for architectural and interior architectural representations will be taught in this course. The course requires basic manual skills such as drafting and making of models. Within the context of the course, students will study on classworks and homeworks to improve their ability.

Introduction to Construction Elements course cover the load-bearing and non-load-bearing elements of solid load-bearing wall structural system and frame (skeleton) structural system. Therefore the sub-structural elements such as soil types and excavation, trenching and shoring, surface water and drainage, foundations, foundation walls, ground floor construction; and the super structural elements such as walls (stone and brick masonry walls, reinforced concrete monolithic walls, timber and steel frame walls and sandwich panel walls), floors (reinforced concrete slab, slab and beam, ribbed, waffle and composite floors), columns and beams, stairs and ramps, and chimneys are examined. In this course it is aimed to enable the students to use the constructional knowledge in their architectural design projects.

This course is focusing on to give the interior space design associate department students professional skill in graphical presentation of design ideas and concepts through application of knowledge on descriptive geometry methods, oblique projections, isometric and perspective drawings. The course is designed for interior space design associate department students to develop their spatial understanding and way of thinking in the process of design. The students will be able to draw Pictorial views of geometric objects in form of plan oblique, elevation oblique, isometry, one-point and two-point perspective used in presentation of student’s projects. They will have better understanding of relationships between orthographic projections, oblique ones and perspective. This course aims also to improve student’s spatial thinking and skill of sketching. Thus they can develop creative approach to design solutions and presentation of projects.

Summer training I provides to interior space design associate department students the ability to understand how the design process works within the construction site and improve of the capability to gain experience to put theoretical knowledge in to practice. Also, students comprehend interior space designer’s role and responsibility at the construction site, in obtaining commissions, and accomplishing contracts, managing employees and selecting consultants, recommending project delivery ways, and forms of service contracts. One of the main aims of the course is to teach students to comprehend to evaluate, record, and process information gathered during internship. The minimum time for the summer training is 30 days. Submission of a daily diary and a written report on experience will be required in accordance with the rules and regulations set by department.

The course aims to develop the interior space design associate department students' design skills through the contemplation of design principles in regards to design and organization of interior spaces where emphasis is put on developing awareness on materials and services such as lighting, colour and texture as well as ergonomics, human behaviour, environmental, structural and socio-cultural concerns. The students develop an understanding of building form, structure and envelope and a response to given context. The given problem involves the reorganization of small sized interior spaces which involves systematic study on site research, concept development, space organization, structural analysis, material selection, lighting, colour and texture. The students are not only expected to materialize their creative skills but also discover their original personal styles within the formed 3D relations and the spatial quality.

This course covers the factors which affect the building materials specification (user requirements, building design, soil, environmental factors, cost), the properties, and the basic materials used in building construction. The physical properties of the building materials (density, gravity, porosity, void ratio, conductivity, thermal capacity, fire resistance, etc.); the mechanical properties (loading, hardness, toughness, fatigue); and environmental effects of the building materials (soil, water, air pollution and solid waste) are examined. The environmental effects are considered by Life Cycle Analyses. Natural and artificial timber products, natural stone, bricks, concrete and reinforced concrete, steel and other metals, and glass are covered by the course. The other materials are given as research projects to the students. The subjects are examined according to the architectural and interior design principles.

This course contains the analysis, design and constructional principles of the building elements. In this context as a structural element roofs (terrace roofs, hipped, gable roofs, roof elements /post, beam, rafter, roof trusses, roof finishes, rain gutters and pipes, water and moisture insulation solutions); as completion elements roof lights, wall openings, doors and windows, banisters and rails, suspended ceilings, raised floors, etc.; finally as finishes floor, wall, ceiling surface finishes, surface joint finishes, expansion joints finishes, etc. are examined. In Building Construction For Interior Space Design course, it is aimed to enable the students to gain necessary basic knowledge on designing and constructing the hardware of a building. Subjects are examined in terms of architectural and interior design principles.

Climate and climatic elements, climatic comfort, design parameters related to built environment which are effective on climate and energy control design of built environment as energy efficient passive climate system; light, visual comfort, design parameters related to built environment which are effective on light control (windows, room dimensions, reflectivity of internal surfaces, obstructions, artificial light sources, etc.), design of natural lighting system, design of artificial lighting system and installation, integrated lighting system; sound, human health and noise relation, acoustical comfort, design parameters related to built environment which are effective on noise control (site, building distances and orientation, room form, building envelope, obstructions, etc.), design of built environment as noise control system, acoustical design of halls are analyzed by the help of interior space projects.

The course introduces students with basic speech patterns at the elementary level. Through listening students will identify different sound rhythms and practice pronunciation of letters, words and phrases. Through speaking students will identify different register and use the given language in an appropriate way. In addition students will be able to define themselves or others, answer questions in the Present Simple tense, use the prepositions of place, and talk about their daily routines. Through reading students read paragraphs and simple texts to improve their general comprehension of the passages, and answer the given comprehension questions. Through writing, students will be able to compose guided,controlled paragraphs in the Present Simple tense, and recycle the obtained new vocabulary to produce their own sentences.

This is usually realized through restoration/renovation of existing medium scaled buildings where students are expected to develop self-motivation, imagination through generation of ideas and concepts so that they do not only materialize their creative and manual graphic skills but also move towards the conception of their original personal styles within the formed 3D relations and the spatial quality.

The aim of this course is to introduce the principles of professional practice to the interior space design associate department students, focusing on the historical, ethical, and legal framework of the practice of interior design and to educate the students’ awareness of the professional responsibilities of the interior space design technician as a member of the building team. By completing this course students will comprehend ethical issues in interior space design practice; will be capable managing financial operations, services and compensation and competent for of managing the business’s finances, preparing design contracts and product pricing consideration. They also be able to practice interior space design profession according to rules of registration; certification; protection of trademarks, designs, and inventions by license.

The contents of this course cover the technical services and systems within a building. The principles of those systems and their integration with interior space design are examined. In this context heating systems (individual and central heating), heating-ventilation-air-conditioning (HVAC) systems; clean / tap water and sanitary systems; electricity / power and lighting system; fire systems and design solutions (emergency exits, fire stairs, etc.); communication systems (telephone, internet, and television); security systems (alarms, cameras, recording, remote-control, etc.) are covered by the course. Interior space design associate department students are required to examine those systems, to determine the probable problems and produce possible solutions on the interior space design project of an existing building.

YDL102 is the continuation of YDL101. The course integrates the four main skills at a higher elementary level for students. Through recessive skills, which are listening and reading, students identify different sound rhythms and practice the pronunciation of letters, words and phrases. Also, by reading higher level paragraphs and texts, students infere the meaning of new words by using their existing vocabulary. Through productive skills, which are speaking and writing, students identify different register and use the given language in an appropriate way. Furthermore, students use the Present Continuous and Past Simple tenses to participate in basic dialogues and daily exchanges, and express themselves effectively. Also, through writing, students produce their own sentences by recycling the obtained new vocabulary in guided, controlled paragraphs they compose.
