Our curriculum offers graduates essential privileges regarding targeted characteristics. This department aims to train midwives who: can help women and their families during pre-natal, delivery and post-natal period with a holistic perspective within the society; acknowledge the significance of mother’s health; adopts the fundamental theories, concepts and principles of midwifery; can detect risky situations and deviations from health concerning pregnancy and delivery early on; can use the nursing-education-counseling techniques in the process of regaining and maintaining health; can give family planning counseling services necessary for maternal and infant health. An education that follows and transpose on current developments, especially regarding health protection and individual-centered care is offered in this department. In addition to the compulsory courses offered to students on the basis of learning objectives, elective courses are offered to help students get equipped for both professional and personal development in accordance with their own interests. Students also have the opportunity to practice many professional skills in a well-equipped laboratory environment. Following the laboratory practices, different hospitals and institutions provide authentic knowledge and skills through the internships.
Training is conducted in the form of theoretical, pre-clinical skill and clinical training. In the laboratories, there are two adult models allowing basic nursing practices, a simulation model for cardiopulmonary massage, a pregnancy simulation model for delivery practices, a neonatal care and practice model, skeleton, anatomy model, sphygmomanometer, aspirator, and chest tube drainage device available. This gives students the opportunity to do small group work and practice all kinds of skills which are necessary for their profession. The department continues its education with three professors, three assistant professors and five instructors in its staff. In addition to this core staff, academic members from other units of the university also offer courses. The department is located on the campus of the university where canteen and cafeteria, sports facility, swimming pool and student dining rooms are available. Our students also benefit from the common library of the campus.
Midwifes can work in many governmental and private health sector such as the Ministry of Health hospitals, university hospitals, community health centers, maternal and infant health and family planning centers, family practice centers, private hospitals and outpatient clinics. They can also work as personal midwives if they establish private health clinics. Midwives' working areas are changing and expanding with the changing health care needs and population structure around the world so midwives can work in these changing areas as well. In addition to the midwifery education, the graduates receiving the teaching certificate can work in the midwifery colleges. They can also find employment in midwifery schools, vocational health schools after Master and Ph.D. education. This allows graduates to work as individuals who contribute to the development of the profession, both as an instructor and a researcher.
