Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies

About

Founded in 2012, our faculty has made great progress over the years. It provides training opportunities to hundreds of students at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels on productivity and related technologies in agriculture. In a contemporary and multicultural campus environment, it provides information and services that will raise awareness about sustainable agriculture in line with current demands with our students in line with social responsibility, as well as education in agriculture with practical and technological applications.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to follow new information and technologies in the fields of agricultural production, equipped with modern professional knowledge and skills, in accordance with scientific principles, in line with sustainability and ethical principles in the agricultural field, within the framework of universal values and national needs; able to learn and teach continuously; producing, researching and applying; To train qualified professionals who are open to development and change, have national and international competitiveness, have a broad perspective, have self-confidence, and thus contribute to the welfare of the society.

Our vision, as a unit of Cyprus International University, located on the most fertile lands of Cyprus; To be a pioneering, exemplary and sought-after faculty that is sensitive to the environment and ethical values, has a competitive power at the national and international level in terms of the contemporary education and training activities it carries out, the scientific research and development studies it carries out and the qualified professional staff it trains.

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

The language of instruction is English, our faculty is accredited by the Higher Education Institution, and our graduates can easily find jobs and continue their academic careers all over the world as a result of the education they receive. Our faculty has an application infrastructure in almost every branch of agriculture. Faculty students have the opportunity to conduct research, applied training and internship in the 'Application, Research and Education Farm' of 2940 decares located adjacent to the CIU Campus. A total of 655 decares of the total horticultural farm area is divided into perennial species, including 420 decares of olives, 75 decares of cool climate fruit species and 260 decares of vineyards. Vegetable cultivation is carried out under cover in 45 decares and in the open in 25 decares. In addition to these, there is a fully controlled greenhouse for the cultivation of gardens, medicinal and aromatic plants and ornamental plants on an area of approximately one decare. There is a medicinal and aromatic plants garden on campus for student practices.

There are modern olive (500m2) and grape processing facilities actively working within the farm. Field crops such as alfalfa and cereals are grown in 2030 decares of the farm area. There are poultry farms on an area of approximately 100 decares and cattle/sheep breeding enterprises on 85 decares.
There are over 1000 cattle of different age groups and a dairy in the farm. In the poultry farm, there are 27 poultry houses, each of which is 720 m2. Of these, 9 have breeding egg production facilities and a production capacity of 18,000 chicks/week. Egg production is carried out in three poultry houses with a production capacity of 40,000 eggs/day. Meat production is carried out in the other 16 poultry houses. In addition to these, sports and hobby activities are carried out in the horse farm on campus.

Biotechnology Research Center (BRC) Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory provides molecular studies. This laboratory is divided into various functional workstations, taking into account the sample material to be used and the sensitivity and risk of contamination. These functional workstations include the solution preparation station (pH meter, magnetic stirrer, distilled water device, etc.) where solutions and pharmacological agents are prepared; protein workstation where protein isolation and gene expression studies are performed (refrigerated centrifuge, SDS electrophoresis system, "Western blotting" system, and "chemiluminescence" imaging system); DNA workstation for cDNA synthesis (nano-spectrophotometer, centrifuge, block heater, etc.); PCR workstation where nucleotide expression studies are performed (realtime PCR rotary cycler, UV imaging system, horizontal and vertical electrophoresis system); There is an RNA workstation (nano-spectrophotometer, centrifuge, block heater, etc.) where RNA isolation and expression are studied. The most up-to-date and modern technological molecular studies can be carried out in these areas.

In summary, our students complete their education and training in order to graduate with both practical and academic equipment, focused on productivity in agriculture, following current and technological developments as well as classical applications.
