Artificial Intelligence makes life easy

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering faculty member Assist. Prof. Dr. Öykü Akaydın talked about how Artificial Intelligence, a term  we have started to hear very frequently, is being used in almost all areas and is highly preferred as it facilitates our daily lives.

Speaking on the occasion of the March 8-14th  Science and Technology Week, Assist. Prof. Dr. Akaydin stated that Artificial Intelligence is described as computers that can think like humans, and in fact Artificial Intelligence is a computer program that has cognitive functions peculiar  to the human brain such as thinking, learning, problem solving, decision making, perception and communication or engages in some autonomous behavioral patterns.

Akaydın reminded that Artificial Intelligence emerged when Alan Turing asked the question, “Can machines think?” adding for a long time AI was considered mere fantasy  and a theme in science fiction.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Akaydın said when the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue beat the reigning world Chess champion Gary Kasparov in 1997, the idea that artificial intelligence would not only be a theme in science fiction books but also utilized in daily life.

Reminding that today Artificial Intelligence has started to be used in a wide range of domains. Some Artificial Intelligence applications are auto-correct, automatic translation systems, web browsing,  shopping suggestions, Chat Bots and mobile assistant applications, driverless cars, navigation, electric vacuum cleaners, and many more examples can be listed here.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Akaydın  stated that integrating Artificial  Intelligence in the health sector helps reduce medical errors. The main objective of using AI in medicine is to drastically reduce the number of mistakes made in the world of health care.
