Award-winning director met with students

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Communication 2003 graduate Ashvin Matthew, the winner of 4 awards at the “Silk Road Film Awards” 2021 Cannes Film Festival with his film production  “3Devi” met with the CIU students.

In the event organized online by the CIU Alumni Communication and Career Center, Ashvin Matthew talked about why he chose this field for a living and shared with the students  his post graduation experiences.

Matthew talked about the significance of choosing a career field before graduation.  “During my years at school, I tried to take advantage of every opportunity related to  my field, and tried different things.  I am advising you to make good use of every opportunity that comes your way,” said Matthew.    When he was still a student, he said he worked simultaneously at Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation, and this was a great opportunity for him to realize that working at a radio station was not the best fit for him.

Matthew said he was highly interested in theater during and after his years  at the university. Upon his return to his home country after graduation, he said he received a film offer from one of the famous Bollywood actresses. That’s how his acting story began.

He said he acted in 14 films and later founded his own company Alter Ego Entertainment. He received various awards in international festivals like Cannes and New Jersey Film Festival  with his first film production “3Devi” which he wrote and directed.

In his speech, CIU graduate Matthew addressed the still undecided students about choosing a career path after graduation , telling them to first focus on their classes.  He also told them they will be able to understand whether they are interested in the radio-TV track or Film during the first 2 semesters.

Matthew also said there is no limit to research and self-development. “You can use your own phones to tell your story  without the need for advanced technological equipment to reflect your ideas.” Matthew went on to tell that instead of sitting and waiting for a job to arrive at your doorstep, it is essential for students to create opportunities. He finally said that social life was as important as academic life.

Matthew concluded by saying  he was happy to see the University growing rapidly and was proud to see CIU develop academically and physically.
