Celebrating Forest Week at CIU

Assist. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Ok from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies of Cyprus International University made important statements regarding the protection of nature on the occasion of Forest Week.

Ok said, “Forests are one of our most important natural assets on earth. They not only increase biodiversity but also undertake critical functions such as maintaining climate balance, managing water resources and preventing soil erosion.”  His aim was to explain how indisputable the impact of forests on ecosystems is.

Ok also pointed out that forests are exposed to serious threats in our day and age, adding, "According to United Nations data, approximately 10 million hectares of forest are being destroyed every year around the world. This situation leads to problems such as loss of biodiversity, increased effects of climate change and its impact on vulnerable communities and their livelihoods.”

Dr. Ok also referred to the rich flora and fauna of Northern Cyprus, saying, "TRNC is home to approximately 1,500 different plant species. Among these, the endemic species that are unique to the island stand out. For example, the Cyprus Tulip and the Cyprus Maple are native to the island of Cyprus and both are an addition to the  natural beauty off the region."

Cyprus International University continues to contribute to social awareness by organizing various events that encourage active student participation in the activities organized during the  Forest Week. To conclude, Dr. Ok said, " By protecting these valuable natural assets, we can leave a greener world for future generations. Let's plant trees, protect forests and let's celebrate the beauty of nature by keeping it alive.”
