Due to the Covid-19 epidemic and the increasing number of cases, Cyprus International University (CIU) organized its 2020-2021 Academic Year Spring Semester Graduation Ceremony online.

The ceremony, which was broadcast live on the university’s official YouTube channel, saw opening speeches from TRNC Prime Minister Ersan Saner, Minister of National Education and Culture Olgun Amcaoğlu, and CIU Rector, Prof. Dr. Halil Nadiri.

Graduating 18.455 students since its opening in 1997, CIU graduated a total of 3365 excited graduates during the 2020-2021 Spring Semester Graduation Ceremony.

In the speech made by TRNC Prime Minister Ersan Saner, while congratulating the graduates stated, “In your life after now, these memories will pass through your minds like frames in a film. When you remember these, at times you will laugh, at times your eyes will fill up, however, you will never forget the friendships you have accumulated here”. While hoping that this new start for the graduates will lead to them to having long and beautiful roads, Saner continued, “The steps you have taken here for the future and the experience you have gained due to the education you have received here, with your vision and your perspective on life, from today, this ending will in fact evolve into a new beginning”.

In his speech, stating that this year has passed in the shadow of the pandemic, National Education and Culture Minister Amcaoğlu went on to state, “The most affected institution due to the pandemic was the education institution. It is unfortunate that our universities and our students received a share of this difficult and problematic process”. Expressing his wishes for the student’s success in their new lives, Minister Amcaoğlu continued, “I would like to thank the academics and the university who raised them, and I would also like to thank the families and the countries who did not withhold their financial and moral support, who have been waiting for their graduations with excitement”.

Reminding that the graduates have experienced a long and tiring process due to the pandemic, CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Nadiri went on to state, “Our graduates, we are proud of you. The Cyprus International University diploma that you deserve, with the experience of different cultures that have developed your knowledge and skills, displays that you are fully prepared for your next career journey. Adding that the aim of the Cyprus International University is to add to the student intellectual development, and to raise their knowledge and abilities to the highest level possible, Nadiri continued, “In the next part of your life, as you move forward upon a path illuminated by reason and science; do not forget your responsibilities towards yourself, your family, and your country, and always listen to the voice of your conscience”.

The ceremony was concluded with messages from the Deans and Directors to the graduates, the reading of the graduate names, the academics' farewell messages to the graduates, and the traditional cap throwing.
