CIU Academician Prof. Dr. Hatice Sütçü drew attention to the importance of Covid-19 disinfection

Cyprus International University (CIU) School of Health Sciences Academic Staff Prof. Dr. Hatice Sütçü, stated that in the recent passing days there has been an increase in coronavirus cases, explained that in an effort to prevent the spreading of the virus, as well as personal protection measures, drew attention to the importance of consistently cleaning with effective cleaning products.

Reminding of the values provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Prof. Dr. Sütçü, went on to advise, “It is advised that for cleaning 70% alcohol or Isopropyl (should remain on surfaces for at least 30 seconds), 3% hydrogen peroxide concentration (should remain on surfaces for at least 1 minute), and bleach that has 5-6% sodium hypochlorite concentration (should remain on surfaces for at least 1 minute), should be used”.

Also reminding that frequently and intensely utilized disinfectants, especially bleach, have a negative effect on human health, Sütçü explained that these disinfectants in question can lead to an increase in attacks in those suffering from bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Adding that the disinfection of frequently used surfaces should not be processed by individuals with respiratory hypersensitivity, asthma, or COPD sufferers, if possible, Prof. Dr. Sütçü advised that the individual doing the cleaning should wear a mask and gloves, that the area being cleaned should be aired during and after for a few hours, as well as moving to another area after the cleaning is done.

Drawing attention to the fact that using spray disinfectants or mixing the disinfectant with hot water is even more harmful due to the particles spreading in the air, Sütçü went on to warn, “Also, a disinfectant should not be mixed with other disinfectants”.

Stating that during cleaning, protective glasses should be worn and that skin that has had contact with the disinfectant should be washed thoroughly, and after cleaning, the clothes being worn should be changed, Sütçü concluded, “It should not be forgotten that any household pets should also be protected”.
