CIU Highlights Early Detection in Breast Cancer

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Medicine Assistant Professor Dr. Hasti Jabbari highlighted the importance of awareness, early detection and appropriate screening methods as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, emphasizing the importance of access to reliable information and timely medical assessment.

Dr. Hasti Jabbari emphasized the importance of being familiar with how one’s breasts normally look and feel, stating, “A new lump, changes in the skin or nipple, unusual discharge, or persistent discomfort should be medically assessed. Most breast changes are not cancer, but new or unusual findings should be evaluated promptly.”
Jabbari noted that current evidence does not support routine breast self-examination as a screening test, as it has not been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality. However, she emphasized that breast awareness remains important. Knowing what is normal for an individual can help identify changes between screening appointments and ensure that they are reported to a healthcare professional in a timely manner.

Highlighting the role of mammography in breast cancer screening, Jabbari stated that current recommendations for women at average risk include regular mammographic screening. She noted that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammography every two years for women aged 40–74. For women at high risk, annual breast MRI together with mammography may also be recommended, depending on individual risk factors and medical assessment.

Jabbari emphasized that Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than raising awareness. Reliable information, timely evaluation of unusual findings and appropriate access to screening and healthcare services all play an important role in the early detection and management of breast cancer.
