CIU hosts award winning documentary director Tahsin İşbilen

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Communications, Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, organized an event titled, “The Case of Migration and Documentary Cinema”.

Within the framework of the series of seminars that aim to bring together students of the Faculty of Communication with professionals from the sector, award winning documentary director Tahsin İşbilen attended the event as a speaker.

Beginning his speech by emphasizing the phenomenon of migration, which is a topic concerning almost all countries in the world and continues to be contemporary, İşbilen noted that every migration maintains many stories within itself and that in this sense, the phenomenon of migration is a treasure for documentary filmmakers.

In the rest of his speech, Tahsin İşbilen, who is at the same time a member of the Documentary Filmmakers Association, stated that directors are storytellers, and informed the students in relation to the responsibilities of the director in explaining an event.

Drawing attention to the fact that documentary cinema has its own personal language and design, İşbilen shared information in relation to documentary cinema’s characteristics, principles, functions, and importance.

In his speech, İşbilen also focused upon the production processes of documentary films, and advised that during this process, the director takes on very important duties.

Noting that during the production of documentary films, the director has a duty towards the people they take on as subject and the viewers, and that during this process they are faced with a number of ethical issues, Tahsin İşbilen shared his opinion in relation to how you can solve these issues by giving examples from his own productions.

The event that was realized with the great participation from the students saw documentary director Tahsin İşbilen share his knowledge and experiences with the students in relation to the phenomenon of migration and the place it has found within documentary cinema and expressed his joy in having the opportunity to share with them.
