International Success from CIU Engineering Students

Cyprus International University (CIU) achieved significant success at the 29th International Cultural and Academic Meeting of Engineering Students (ICAMES’25), held between May 5–11, 2025, and hosted by Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. The event, held under the theme “Healthcare Infrastructure and Innovations in Biotechnology,” featured 20 projects from 12 different universities.

CIU participated with two projects aimed at providing engineering solutions to healthcare challenges: the SmartMed Mobile Application, designed to improve hospital appointment processes, and an antimicrobial, self-sterilizing paint produced using an environmentally friendly method. Following evaluations by a jury composed of faculty members from Boğaziçi University’s Faculty of Engineering, CIU’s paint project was selected as one of the eight projects to advance to the oral presentation stage.

The CIU students presented their projects alongside teams from prestigious universities such as Simon Fraser University (Canada), University of Genoa (Italy), University of Calabria (Italy), Babeș-Bolyai University (Romania), University of Applied Sciences (Austria), Georgian Technical University, and University of Belgrade (Serbia). During the event, they received constructive feedback from the jury and had the opportunity to improve both their technical knowledge and presentation skills. The event also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in healthcare technologies and the importance of life cycle cost analysis in engineering projects.

CIU students stated that participating in ICAMES’25 contributed to their academic development and was a culturally enriching experience. Yara Kalam described the event as “a transformative experience in my personal development,” while Eliane Kavira Mulenga emphasized the opportunity to “build scientific and cultural connections with participants from different countries.” Judy Kalam described ICAMES as “a turning point in my academic journey.”

Assist. Prof. Dr. Shihab Ibrahim, a faculty member at CIU’s Faculty of Engineering, highlighted that the event offered students the chance to develop communication and critical thinking skills while exploring international engineering practices. “It is a source of pride for our university that our students took part in such a prestigious platform,” he said.
