The issue of modern times: “leading a sedentary life”

Cyprus International University (CIU) School of Physical Education and Sports Lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şükrü Rona stated that nowadays people lead a sedentary and passive lifestyle and noted that this has many negative effects in terms of health.

Rona stated that most people adopt a sedentary lifestyle, and  pointed out that both the duration and the level of physical activities are low.

Rona said that a sedentary lifestyle can be defined as a lack of physical activity, excessive time spent sitting or lying down, excessive use of technology and low energy expenditures. He added that  this situation can lead to obesity, heart and circulatory diseases, digestive system disorders, sleep disorders, type 2 diabetes, and the negative effects on the immune system. . He also stated that it can cause a number of health problems ending in muscle and joint problems, depression and anxiety.

In order to lead a healthy life, Rona pointed out the importance of adopting physical activity and an active lifestyle, adding that this is especially necessary for people in advanced ages.

He  also indicated that that being active by exercising regularly or taking care to be more mobile by making small changes in daily routines will increase the quality of life.  Rona said that with increasing physical activity, muscle strength and flexibility will increase, and the ability to perform daily life activities will be  easy and more effective.

Noting that the importance and necessity of physical activity is supported by many studies at the academic level, Rona emphasized that physical activity and sports are necessary to lead a healthy and independent life.

To conclude, Rona recommended that individuals of all ages should be encouraged to engage in physical activity and supported with appropriate programs, and said, "This is an important step to increase community health and life satisfaction of individuals."
