It is of great importance to raise tax awareness in the society
International Cyprus University (CIU) Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Faculty Member Assist. Prof. Dr. Kemal Çek stated on the occasion of the Tax Week that this is a great opportunity to raise awareness among the young generations about the significance of taxes and implementing it to all segments of the society.
Çek pointed out the significance of raising awareness at the individual level as well as combating tax evasion and informal economy. Dr. Çek also highlighted that legal sanctions and audits are indispensable in this context.
Tax payers should voluntarily comply with paying their taxes instead of suffering from legal sanctions, and to this end tax awareness should be raised in the society. Assist. Prof. Dr. Çek said the most important factor in creating tax awareness is the level of education of the society and the effectiveness of tax-related training activities implemented into educational applications.
Taxes are the most basic resource for the state to fulfil its duties. Çek said, “Taxes are not only a resource but they also help the state to achieve social, economic and political goals.”
The Pandemic conditions we are in remind us once again of the strong state resources. Çek also said, “Considering the pandemic conditions and the changes in the global markets, the financial burden on our state has increased. In countries like ours where declaration-based taxation is utilized, tax awareness plays a significant role.”
It is of great importance for tax payers to fulfil their tax obligations correctly within this context. Tax is a vital element for the sustainability and healthy functioning of the public system.
Finally, Assist. Prof. Dr.Çek said paying taxes is a responsibility to the society that everyone has to abide by and that taxes paid are the guarantee of our future.
