Message from CIU on World Engineering Day
Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu, a faculty member of the Faculty of Engineering at Cyprus International University (CIU), drew attention to the strategic role of engineering in sustainable development processes in his statement on the occasion of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development on March 4.
Abbasoğlu stated that sustainability has evolved into a broader concept of development today, saying: “Global challenges such as climate change, the depletion of energy resources, environmental pollution, and rapid urbanization have moved sustainability beyond being solely an environmental concept. In addressing these challenges, engineering stands out as one of the most critical fields that transforms knowledge into social benefit.”
Abbasoğlu emphasized that engineering has a wide range of application areas, from energy production and infrastructure systems to digital transformation and environmental management. He noted that renewable energy systems, smart buildings, circular economy practices, and environmentally friendly technologies are important tools for achieving development goals.
Providing information about the academic structure of the Faculty of Engineering, Abbasoğlu stated that the faculty has a comprehensive education and research infrastructure with 16 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs, more than 3,000 students, and 22 laboratories. He also noted that four undergraduate programs are accredited by MÜDEK, which is authorized to grant the EUR-ACE label under the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE), demonstrating that the quality of education meets international standards. In addition, he mentioned that the faculty is a member of the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI), placing it within international engineering education networks.
In his statement, Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu also said: “As CIU, we consider sustainability not only as an academic objective but also as an institutional management approach. Our energy-efficient campus practices, renewable energy investments, and environmental management policies are concrete reflections of this approach.”
Abbasoğlu concluded by noting that World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development on March 4 reminds us of the transformative role engineering plays for humanity, emphasizing that engineering is not limited to producing technical solutions but is also a strategic discipline that shapes the future of societies. He added that the CIU Faculty of Engineering continues its work in line with this understanding.
