Nurses are working in the frontline with devotion due to the Covid-19 pandemic
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing Head Prof. Dr. Hatice Sütçü Çiçek, speaking within the scope of 12th May International Nursing Day, stated that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses are working at the very frontline, using their information and skills, working with great devotion, and that in this cause, they have even lost their lives.
Covid-19 mücadelesinde tanı, takip ve tedavi süresince hemşirelerin zor şartlarda çalıştıklarını dile getiren Çiçek, kendilerini insan sağlığına adadıklarının da altını çizdi.
Expressing that in the fight against Covid-19, nurses work under difficult conditions while trying to perform diagnosis, follow-ups, and treatment, Çiçek underlined that they have a commitment to human health.
Drawing attention to the fact that in the development of nursing, wars have played an important role, Çiçek went on to state, "Just like when Nightingale volunteered during the Crimean War, nurses have also fought behind the front lines for human health".
Stating that Nightingales nursing has had important contributions, Prof. Dr. Çiçek continued “There has been a reform in patient hygiene in an effort to prevent the spreading of this viral disease, with respect to airing the patients’ rooms, categorizing the patients according to illness, patients being kept in different wards, and in the cleaning of hands and instruments used in patient care. By keeping records of death and the statistics produced, she has taken her place as the first female statistician”.
At the end of her statement, Çiçek congratulated all the nurses and the educators who contributed to the occupations development, on 12th May International Nurses Day.
Prof. Dr. Çiçek modern anlamda hemşireliğin başlangıç noktasının asil hanımların iyilik yapma istekleri olduğunu anımsatarak, “Florence Nightingale ise hemşireliğin yardım etme, bakım sağlama istek ve becerisinden fazlası olması gerektiğini savunarak ileri bir eğitim ile bağımsız bir meslek olmasını sağlayan kişidir” dedi.
Hemşireliğin gelişimde savaşların önemli rolü olduğuna dikkat çeken Çiçek, “Nightingale’in Kırım Savaşı’nda gönüllü çalışmasında olduğu gibi hemşireler insanların sağlığı için cephe gerisinde de mücadele etmişlerdir” ifadesini kullandı.
Prof. Dr. Çiçek, Nightingale’in hemşireliğe önemli katkıları olduğunu söyleyerek, “Bulaşıcı hastalıkların yayılmasını önlemek amacıyla hasta odalarının havalandırılması, hastaların hastalıklarına göre sınıflandırılması, ayrı koğuşlarda yatırılması, ellerin ve bakımda kullanılan malzemelerin yıkanması ile hasta bakımında hijyen reformu yapmıştır. Ölüm kayıtlarını tutarak yaptığı istatistikler ile yine ilk kadın istatistikçi olarak tarihteki yerini almıştır” şeklinde konuştu.
Açıklamasında sonunda Çiçek, tüm hemşirelerin ve mesleğin gelişiminde emeği geçen eğitimci, araştırmacı hemşirelerin 12 Mayıs Hemşireler Günü’nü de kutladı.
