Professor from CIU Participated as a Speaker at UGTAS-2025
Prof. Dr. Ahsen Işık Özgüven, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies and Head of the Department of Plant Production and Technologies at Cyprus International University (CIU), participated as an invited speaker at the International Turkic World Youth Agriculture Symposium (UGTAS-2025) held in Tokat.
Organized to create a platform for the exchange of ideas on topics such as the future of agriculture, the transformation of agriculture in the digitalization process, sustainable agricultural practices, and environmental awareness, the symposium featured Prof. Dr. Özgüven’s presentation titled “Horticulture and Sustainability in the Agriculture of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
The symposium, which aimed to enhance scientific interaction within the Turkic world, strengthen the international visibility of young researchers, and contribute to the sustainable future of agriculture, was attended by scientists, academics, and protocol members from Türkiye as well as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and other Turkic republics. In addition, vocational high school principals and students from Türkiye, along with undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, took part in the event.
In her presentation, Prof. Dr. Özgüven emphasized that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has significant potential for horticultural production thanks to the favorable conditions provided by its Mediterranean climate. She stated that initiatives such as modern greenhouses, protected cultivation, contemporary irrigation techniques, conservation of local varieties, ornamental plant cultivation, soilless agriculture practices, and eco-tourism contribute to increasing the sustainability of horticultural agriculture. She noted that these developments are promising for the future of agriculture in the TRNC.
In addition to her presentation, Prof. Dr. Özgüven also provided participants with information about the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies and the Department of Plant Production and Technologies at Cyprus International University.
