The rapid increase of temperatures increases the risk of forest fires

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering Academic Staff Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şifa Doğan, gave warnings in relation to the increasing forest fires in our country.

Drawing attention to the fact that we are experiencing a climate crisis which is affecting the entire world, Doğan reminded that as a result of human actions, the average temperatures in the world have rapidly increased, and that this situation has brought with it the risk of experiencing forest fires.

In her statement, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan said, “When we look at the data from the past 140 years, the temperature anomaly observed on the earth's surface has an increasing tendency”.

Sharing the information that natural fires or those that are as a result of human activity, trigger a series of events such as the release of greenhouse gases and the deterioration of the balance of the ecosystem, Doğan continued to advise, "This situation pushes humanity back into the cycle of experiencing environmental disasters and change".

Reminding of the fires in Turkey that are still in effect and haven’t been extinguished, as well as fires in the TRNC at Lapta, Karşıyaka, and Mallıdağ areas, Doğan drew attention to the fact that there are still deficiencies on the subjects of fire prevention and fire intervention.

Making a statement in relation to the fire maps published by the American Space and Aviation Administration, Doğan continued, “These maps display to us the extent of these fires and demonstrates how big the change we are experiencing is”.

Stating that high temperatures are expected to continue throughout the month of August, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan concluded, “I invite our public to adhere to the precautions set by our country’s Department of Forestry. Additionally, I hope that campaigns for the re-establishment of lost forest areas will be taken as an example in our country”.
