Recommendations for sustainable tourism

Cyprus International University (CIU) School of Tourism and Hotel Management hosted the launch of the special issue of the Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes journal that included papers on " Transitioning from unsustainable to sustainable: What are the solutions for tourism industry 
in the TRNC."

At the event, Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes editor Prof. Dr. Richard Teare, special issue editors Prof. Ali Öztüren and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hale Özdoğaç Özgit shared the results of the scientific studies published in the journal with the representatives of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment as well as the representatives of the sector.

Prof. Dr. Teare in his speech at the launch of the second special issue, stated that scientific criteria are important for the transition to sustainability in tourism and noted that sustainable tourism indicators should be handled with the economic, environmental, social, ecological, cultural and technological dimensions of the sector.

Pointing out that the representatives from the academic field and the sector published in the 2nd  special issue should collaborate  to conduct joint research to support sustainability in tourism, adding that this could be the only way for  achieving sustainable tourism development goals in North Cyprus.

Teare also drew attention to the obstacles TRNC tourism is exposed to which were laid out in the studies carried out jointly by the industry and academia, and emphasized that there is a lack of cooperation and harmony in studies on this matter.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgit, on the other hand, gave information about the development of the sector emerging technologies such as blockchain, and solutions for the problems in transportation and accessibility.

Stating that local governments are autonomous regional structures, Özgit reminded that it is important to support the said administrations in the marketing and development of tourism products by increasing their tourism development capabilities.

The event concluded with the presentation of a copy of the Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes journal to Mine Emiroğlu, Tourism, Promotion and Marketing Manager of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.
