Resilient Cities Emphasized on Architecture Day

On the occasion of World Architecture Day, celebrated every October, Prof. Dr. Cemil Atakara, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture at Cyprus International University (CIU), emphasized that this special day reminds us that architecture is not only about aesthetics and functionality, but also a powerful tool that shapes the future of societies.

“The theme of 2025, ‘Design for Strength,’ emphasizes that architecture must develop an approach that is resilient, sustainable, and human-centered in the face of crises, disasters, and global uncertainties,” said Atakara. He pointed out that the challenges of climate change, rapid urbanization, and natural disasters require us to think about the future in addition to the present when it comes to construction. He also explained that the theme of ‘Design for Strength’ covers not only the durability of reinforced concrete but also social solidarity, cultural continuity, and ecological balance. “Resilient and adaptable built environments are the most important guarantee for societies in the face of crises,” he stated. “On this occasion, I invite all my colleagues and students to celebrate World Architecture Day and to create stronger designs for the future with a sense of responsibility toward both humanity and nature,” he added.

The Transformative Power of Architecture: Design for Society, Culture, and Nature
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertaç İlter, Head of the Architecture Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture at Cyprus International University (CIU), stated that architecture not only carries the responsibility of producing buildings but also plays a role in enhancing the quality of life for society. Highlighting the changes brought about by technological transformations in the role of architects, İlter said, “Today, architects play an active role not only in shaping the physical but also the social and cultural structures of cities.” He emphasized that architecture is the construction of the material foundation for a better future. “World Architecture Day reminds us that our profession is not only an individual responsibility but a social one. My call to all my colleagues, students, and society is this: Let us believe in the transformative power of architecture for a fairer, more inclusive, and greener world,” he added. On this occasion, İlter also addressed the importance of educating future architects, stating, “Students need to be equipped with a sense of social responsibility, ethical values, and aesthetic sensitivity. It is crucial for the new generation of architects to be able to think critically, work interdisciplinary, effectively use digital tools, and at the same time, not lose their cultural sensitivity. At our university, our goal is not only to provide students with technical skills but also to instill an ethical stance and an aesthetic vision.”
