Seminars on the Anatomy of Crying Held at CIU

The second seminar organized as part of the CIU-MEDx Sustainable Health Seminars by the Faculty of Medicine at Cyprus International University (CIU) was held with strong student participation. Assist. Prof. Dr. Martha Orendu Oche Attah, a faculty member of the Faculty of Medicine, attended as the speaker, addressing the topic “The Anatomy of Crying” within a scientific framework and providing comprehensive insights to participants.

During the seminar, Assist. Prof. Dr. Martha Orendu Oche Attah discussed the physiological and emotional aspects of crying in detail, sharing information about the structure, types, and functions of tears. She emphasized that tears are not only an emotional response but also play a vital role in protecting and cleaning the surface of the eye. “Crying is a complex process involving secretion and movement mechanisms. Both physiological and emotional factors are involved in this process,” she stated. She also highlighted the protective functions of proteins, enzymes, and immune components found in tears.

In the continuation of the seminar, Attah elaborated on the lacrimal system in detail, explaining the production process of tears and the anatomical pathways they follow. “Tears are not merely a fluid seen on the surface; they follow a systematic process from production to drainage,” she said, also explaining the reason behind nasal discharge during crying. Additionally, information was shared on embryological development, tear production in animals, and diseases of the lacrimal system.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Martha Orendu Oche Attah also drew attention to recent research on artificial tear production and studies conducted by organoid technology, emphasizing their significance in the treatment of dry eye conditions.
