A Social Responsibility Project for Environmentally Sensitive Generations

Cyprus International University (CIU), Faculty of Education, Department of Preschool Education students carried out a very meaningful social responsibility activity together with the 5-year old pupils at Haspolat Primary School on the occasion of the Forest Week.

The event was organized by Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir, the Chairperson of the Department of Preschool Education to emphasize the significance of social responsibility projects. The aim of this activity organized by the teacher candidates is to get together with the children, to tell them the significance of planting saplings and also explain how important forests are for humans. Dr. Özdemir said their aim was to raise awareness on this matter.

Özdemir also mentioned the fact that every day due to human induced causes, forests are being destroyed. The senior year students İlker Koyuncu, Dilara Özcan, Mehmet Başkurt and Semih İlter explained to the participating pupils the importance of planting saplings as well as the conservation of forests.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir said it was their wish to ensure the future generations are raised as conscientious individuals with an awareness  of the significance of nature. As they were planting the saplings, the teacher candidates explained to the children the significance of increasing the number of trees in forests. In addition, they were also taught the steps to  follow while planting trees like olive, oleander and pine which are especially important in Cyprus.

Among those who participated in the activity were not only the 5-year olds  but also the school administration and the teachers. Dr. Özdemir said it was fun and a very meaningful team activity.
