Taking Steps Together for an Inclusive Society
Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Miçooğulları, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Cyprus International University spoke on the occasion of December 3rd, International Day of Persons with Disabilities. He stated, “Since 1992, December 3rd has been recognized as International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated to emphasize the importance of non-exclusion of people with disabilities, ensuring equal rights for everyone, and highlighting that all individuals are equal regardless of their physical characteristics.” “On December 3rd each year, organizations, federations, NGOs, and volunteers working for people with disabilities organize various events to break societal prejudices and raise awareness. However, there are still shortcomings in societal attitudes,” he continued.
Miçooğulları emphasized that true equality in society can be achieved through accessible infrastructure, proper education, and rehabilitation services, noting that the most important factor is instilling tolerance and empathy for differences from childhood. He pointed out that individuals with disabilities should be seen not as “people who need help,” but as “independent individuals who can contribute,” adding that support should not be about solving the person's problems but about assisting them in maintaining their own lives.
“Disability is a matter that concerns not only individuals and their families but also the entire society. Therefore, individuals with disabilities should be seen as equal citizens who can be empowered with the right support,” Miçooğulları said. He also emphasized that the active participation of people with disabilities in social life and improving their living standards should be ensured. This approach will contribute to the empowerment of both individuals and society.
Miçooğulları further stated that disability should not only be a topic for special days but should be continuously addressed in all areas, from education to politics. He emphasized that cooperation with institutions and civil society would reduce the barriers encountered in daily life. He mentioned that the university provides accessible campus facilities, collaborates with special education institutions, and supports the Wheelchair Basketball Team with volunteer physiotherapy services, aiming to strengthen social participation through sports. He also noted that the educational and awareness-raising activities organized have created awareness in society. “As the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at CIU, we remind that disability is not a condition of isolation but one that requires equality and support. We hope that December 3rd, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, will increase awareness and lead to steps that will strengthen accessibility,” Miçooğulları concluded, wishing all individuals with disabilities a healthy, happy, and productive life.
