Technical Trip to BEM Cement Factory
The Civil Engineering Department of Cyprus International University (CIU) organized a technical trip to Boğaz Industry and Mining Ltd. (BEM Cement Factory) to enable students to observe cement production processes on-site. Faculty of Engineering academic staff member Asst. Prof. Dr. Shihab Ibrahim stated, “The main purpose of the technical trip was to allow students to combine their academic knowledge with practice by seeing cement production, material science, quality control processes, sustainability, and occupational safety topics in the field.”
Emphasizing the significance of the trip, Ibrahim said, “The visit was highly important as it enabled students to become familiar with modern production technologies, understand material behavior, and develop a sense of professional responsibility.” He added, “Sustainability in cement production, reducing air pollution, and implementing occupational safety practices are critically important for public health and the environment. Observing these processes on-site helps students build social awareness.”
Quality Control Manager Dr. Mehmet Akarçay highlighted the vital role civil engineers play in quality control processes while addressing the students participating in the technical visit. He explained the sensitivity of experimental studies and the importance of laboratory procedures, drawing attention to the growing importance of sustainable cement production in the future. Production Manager Ahmet Ertoğrul provided detailed explanations of all production steps, from raw material preparation to grinding and storage. He emphasized the importance of occupational health and safety and shared technical solutions aimed at reducing air pollution that may occur during grinding and storage.
Ibrahim concluded by saying, “The technical trip made a significant contribution to students by enabling them to thoroughly evaluate industrial production processes, observe quality control and sustainability practices on-site, and gain professional awareness.” He added, “We extend our thanks to General Manager Mr. Erhan Bolkan, OHS and Environmental Manager Kaan Özçürümez, Quality Control Manager Dr. Mehmet Akarçay, and Production Manager Ahmet Ertoğrul for their support.”
