Time Management Discussed at Collaborative Learning Meetings
At Cyprus International University (CIU), a seminar on time management was held as part of the “Collaborative Learning Meetings” organized by the Center of Excellence in Learning and Teaching to support the professional development of academic staff. The seminar was delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman Emiroğlu, a faculty member of the Faculty of Education. It addressed the importance of planning time effectively for both individual development and academic work in today’s rapidly changing living conditions. During the event, it was emphasized that the intense flow of information, increasing responsibilities, and the constant accessibility brought by technology have made time management skills even more essential.
Emiroğlu noted that while technological advancements enhance communication opportunities, they can also lead to distractions, highlighting the importance of consciously planning one’s work processes.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman Emiroğlu stated: “Time management is the process of planning, prioritizing, and using one’s time effectively. Today, what matters is not only working hard but working smart through proper planning. Recognizing the value of time, clearly defining goals, and implementing plans with discipline form the foundation of productivity.”
Continuing his speech, Emiroğlu also addressed common mistakes in time management, noting that failing to create to-do lists, not clearly defining goals, misprioritizing tasks, and being unable to control distractions negatively affect work processes. He emphasized that procrastination, in particular, can lead to significant problems in academic contexts and developing a habit of planned work at an early stage contributes positively to academic performance. He also pointed out that evaluating tasks based on their importance and urgency helps in using time more efficiently, stressing the importance of setting realistic and measurable goals during the planning process.
During the seminar, various methods for effective time management were also shared with participants. It was noted that creating daily and weekly plans, dividing tasks into specific time intervals, and establishing an organized work environment enhance productivity. Additionally, digital planning tools were highlighted as useful for tracking responsibilities and ensuring more systematic work processes. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about time management and to help academic staff organize their work processes more effectively. The event concluded with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Assist. Prof. Dr. Osman Emiroğlu by Prof. Dr. Fatoş Silman, Director of the Center of Excellence in Learning and Teaching.
