The Transformative Power of Sport in Society

In an article written by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şükrü Rona, a faculty member at the School of Physical Education and Sports at Cyprus International University (CIU), on the occasion of April 6, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the role of sport in social transformation was comprehensively discussed. Rona emphasized that sport is not merely about competition, but also serves as a universal language that brings together individuals from different cultures on common ground.

Rona noted that sport goes beyond being a physical activity and highlighted its importance as a tool for strengthening social cohesion, promoting equality, and reinforcing shared values. He stated that individuals coming together on the same field, regardless of their identities, being subject to the same rules contributes to the internalization of concepts such as justice, respect, and solidarity. In this respect, he pointed out that sport contributes not only to the economic dimension of social development but also to its human aspect.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şükrü Rona stated: “Sport provides a concrete foundation for strengthening trust, understanding, and cooperation among individuals. Especially for young people, sport is a strategic field that contributes to the development of a sense of responsibility, leadership, and social belonging.”

Rona also recalled that April 6 dates back to the opening of the 1896 Athens Olympic Games and this special day gained international recognition when it was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013. Emphasizing that the inclusive and transformative power of sport should be approached in a more accessible and peace-oriented manner, Rona stated that this understanding would contribute to sustainable development goals.
