White coat ceremony marks the official welcoming of students
2024-2025 Academic Year “White Coat Ceremony” was organized by the Faculty of Dentistry of Cyprus International University (CIU).
CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Halil Nadiri and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry Prof. Dr. Refia Lale Taner delivered speeches at the ceremony held at the conference hall in CIU Çevik Uraz Center.
In his speech at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Nadiri said that healthy smiles are actually a sign of a healthy life, and added, “As professionals in dentistry, you are at the forefront of health services maintaining the well-being of individuals.”
Noting that CIU is one of the important higher education institutions in the region, Nadiri also emphasized that the University achieved a significant success by being ranked in the 601-800 band in the recent rankings of Times Higher Education (THE).
Nadiri also stated that according to the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025 data, conducted to evaluate the contributions of universities in the world to interdisciplinary science, CIU ranked first on the island, seventh in Turkey and 141st in the world.
In addition, Nadiri pointed out that they have become one of the most important health education centers in the region with the investments they have recently made in the field of health education and said, "Our university is proud to train professionals who maintain the highest standards in dental care and contribute to the developments in oral health research."
Addressing the students in his speech, Nadiri said, “You are in the beginning stages of joining one of the most important professions in the world. This profession requires selflessness, tolerance, extraordinary work, determination and consistency. I wish everyone success in this journey.”
Prof. Dr. Taner stated in her speech that the white coat has a traditional representative feature and noted that the color white is the symbol of trust, professionalism and dedication. Drawing attention to the fact that wearing a white coat is a step into a noble profession that has the power to change lives, Taner advised, “Please remember that this is an incredible privilege and responsibility that a healthcare provider should possess.”
Taner also pointed out that the white coats remind us of the incredible potential we have to heal, inspire and lead in the future, saying, “It is a universal symbol that connects you to a tradition of service that has lasted for generations, but it is also a reminder of the responsibility you carry to uphold ethical principles, respect the dignity of every patient and achieve the highest standards in every task you undertake.”
Noting that they work to encourage Dentistry students to embrace the humanistic aspects of dentistry, to treat their patients with compassion and to always strive for excellence in their work, Taner said, “Behind every success there are people who believe in you. Welcome to the world of Dentistry.”
The speeches were followed by the white coat ceremony; and students also had the opportunity to attend seminars to learn scientific information regarding their field.
