The world takes radical measures on energy

Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu, the Director of CIU Sustainable Energy Research Center, made some statements about the use of energy
Cyprus International University (CIU) the Dean of the Faculty the Engineering and Director of the Center for Sustainable Energy Research Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu gave information about the steps taken in energy efficiency all over the world on the occasion of the Energy Efficiency Week and explained the use of energy and efficiency studies in our country.

Noting that many countries have taken radical measures due to the energy crisis in the world, Abbasoğlu said, “Many countries in Europe aim to reduce consumption by compromising comfort conditions in order to get quick results in the short term. For example, in Germany, France and Spain, public buildings can be heated up to a maximum of 19 degrees this winter. The main target is to reduce gas consumption by 15% in total.”

Abbasoğlu stated that energy efficiency can be explained as reducing energy consumption without sacrificing comfort conditions, however, a cutback on energy would mean using less energy disregarding comfort.

Abbasoğlu also said, “We provide 'Energy Efficiency' by using new air conditioners with low energy consumption instead of the old and inefficient air conditioners; but we  also save energy by turning off the air conditioner in rooms that are not used. Though it is not something we may want to implement, but during times like these, for the sake of saving energy, we may need to turn off the air conditioners even in rooms that are used or thermostats will be set to 19-20 degrees instead of the usual 24.

Reminding that the EU aims to make Europe a carbon-neutral continent by 2050 within the framework of the 'Green Reconciliation Agreement' put forth in 2019, Abbasoğlu explained that they aim to implement intensive 'Energy Efficiency' applications until 2030 as the first step within this framework.

Abbasoğlu stated that Turkey has set similar to the EU a net-zero carbon target for 2053,  and added that "Energy Efficiency" plays the leading role in reaching objective.

Referring to the situation in the country at the end of his statements, Abbasoğlu commented, "Many individual studies have been carried out since the beginning of the 2000s, but we have not made any concrete progress at this point."

In this context, Abbasoğlu emphasized the importance of the emergence of a State policy regarding energy in general and energy efficiency in particular, and said that it is important to implement an applicable Energy Efficiency law as soon as possible.

Abbasoğlu stated that after these steps are taken, there are human resources equipped with  the knowledge and experience to both manage the process and take the necessary steps in the field, and concluded by saying, “The energy saved is the cheapest energy. Let's use this cheap resource as of now."
