CIU Hackathon 2026
CIU Hackathon 2026: Empowering Young Minds in Information Systems Design
The CIU Hackathon 2026, organized by the School of Applied Sciences and the Software Development Office at Cyprus International University, was held in March 2026 at the CIU Arena on the CIU campus. Following the inter-university hackathons organized in previous years, this edition was designed specifically for vocational high school students.
Students from different vocational high schools came together to analyze a real-world problem related to information systems, design a solution, and explain it through diagrams. The event supported the development of analytical thinking, problem-solving, system design, and teamwork skills.
The Challenge: Smart City Systems
Information systems play a crucial role in helping institutions operate efficiently, support decision-making, and manage their operations, from healthcare and education to banking and public administration. Understanding how to analyze and design these systems is a valuable step in a young person's academic and professional development.
Participants were challenged to develop a solution design for a smart city system that makes citizens' daily lives easier and helps city services run more efficiently. The problem scenario was kept confidential until the day of the competition.
Event Schedule
The CIU Hackathon 2026 took place at the CIU Arena in March 2026. The event began with an opening speech by the Director of the School of Applied Sciences, after which the teams got to work.
Teams of four were formed from students of different vocational high schools, and each team covered four roles: Analyst, System Designer, Diagram Specialist, and Libero. Throughout the day, the teams analyzed the problem, designed their systems, and explained their solutions through diagrams, with the guidance of academic mentors.
The day concluded with the presentation of the projects and an awards ceremony celebrating the students' hard work.
Awards and Recognition
Projects were evaluated based on criteria such as depth of analysis, consistency of design, creativity, and presentation quality.
At the awards ceremony, the first-place award was presented to the winning team, and all participants were applauded for their effort, creativity, and collaboration.
Looking Forward
CIU Hackathon 2026 was more than a competition. It was an opportunity for vocational high school students to combine their theoretical knowledge with practical application and to experience collaborative production.
We thank all participating students, mentors, and everyone who contributed to the event. By bringing young talents together, we aim to contribute to the development of qualified human resources in the field of information technology.
