Call for Gender Equality on International Women’s Day

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir from the Faculty of Education delivered a remarkable speech  alluding to significant points.

Özdemir said, "On March 8 International Women's Day, various campaigns and events are organized around the world to raise awareness about women's rights, stand against violence and promote gender equality."

Özdemir drew attention to the historical importance of March 8, saying, "The courage of the working women who went on strike for better working conditions in New York in 1857 and lost their lives still resonates today. The struggle they ignited crossed borders and engulfed the entire world."

Emphasizing the difficulties women face in daily life, Özdemir said, "Being a woman often means carrying all the burden silently. There are millions of women at home, at work, on the street whose labor is ignored and whose dreams are deferred. However, history is full of stories of women who do not remain silent."

Özdemir continued her explanation by saying, "In various countries, including ours, the meaning of March 8th is being eroded when women go out and have fun or receive gifts as a remembrance of the occasion " and added, "This trend needs to be regulated and changed to fit the real meaning of the day". Finally, Özdemir concluded her words by saying, "The freedom of women denotes the freedom of societies. In a world where women are strong, there will be empowered justice, peace and love."
