Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics ready to welcome new incoming students

Registration for the 2023-2024 Academic Year  is now open for the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the program which has gained significance especially following the 2019 pandemic. 

Assist. Prof. Dr. Zehra Borataş Şensoy, the Chairperson of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics shared the information that the English-medium program is approved by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) as well as the Higher Education Planning, Supervision, Accreditation and Coordination Council (YODAK).

Şensoy pointed out that Molecular Biology and Genetics is a constantly expanding multidisciplinary field of study. Research is conducted on viruses,  microorganisms, animals, plants,  DNAs and RNAs of humans, metabolites and proteins. Şensoy also explained that these studies offer valuable solutions for understanding the mechanisms that cause the outbreak of diseases such as cancer, for the detection of diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms and for the treatment of these diseases. 

Şensoy also pinpointed to the fact that the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program is important not only for medical and health sciences but also for public health and social life. 

Drawing attention to the importance of research in this field, Şensoy mentioned that the students who major in Molecular Biology and Genetics will have the opportunity to continue their studies in the modern and highly sophisticated laboratories within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Emphasizing that the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is a multidisciplinary field, Şensoy pointed out that the students will also take classes from academics from the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Dentistry.

Şensoy also stated that the employment opportunities for the students who will graduate from this field are diverse in that they can find work in many different areas in both the public and private sectors. 

The  Biotechnology sector; stem cell, genetic diagnosis and In Vitro Fertilization centers, and forensic medicine institutions are the major employment areas  for our graduates. They can also work in pharmaceutical and food industries, or in research-development and quality control units.
