The importance of statistics

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Beton Kalmaz stated that reliable statistical data are necessary to measure the progress made in reaching the development goals and noted that statistics provide basic information for the creation of effective policies and programs necessary for development and progress.

Stating that statistics is a science that has spread to all areas of life, Kalmaz said, “Statistics is used in almost every field. Statistics is collecting data in an accurate and systematic way, and extracting information from the collected data.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalmaz also said that statistics enables the use of a lot of information by transforming the uncertainties into meaningful ones and said, "The data obtained thanks to statistics enables the development of the right policies in solving many problems."

Dr. Kalmaz also stated that statistics primarily helps governments to develop their policies for progress, and at the same time to ensure that the results of the policies they implement are transparent and accountable, and added that statistical information is the key element in measuring, monitoring and managing the policies created.

Kalmaz pointed out that there is a national statistical system that collects statistical data not only from developed but also from developing countries. She also said, "An effective national statistical system that provides regular and reliable data is an important indicator of good governance."

Dr. Kalmaz reminded that the TRNC Statistical Institute is the national statistical institution in the country, and said the data produced by the said institution enabled the implementation of plans and programs in many areas.

Kalmaz drew attention to the fact that data has started to be stored digitally with the recent technological developments, and noted that this approach has accelerated studies and increased research around the world as well as in our country.
