About the Department
The purpose of the Interior Architecture Program is to encourage students to take part in the interior design process within real-life context; to raise the quality of life of the individuals; to increase the efficiency of the social circle; to create spaces that protect the health, safety and well-being of the public; and to integrate theory and practice through individual and administrative problem-solving strategies. The program aims to provide a balance between art, technology and human aspects of the profession, with an awareness of the modern trends and the most recent technological developments in the field of interior architecture. The vision of the program is to ensure that the students gain expert knowledge and experience during their undergraduate education; recognize the importance of geography and universal values; develop a versatile designer identity; demonstrate competence in both current and future artistic and design issues; and focus on responsibility, awareness and social / professional ethics.
Education Opportunities
Aiming to integrate theory and practice through individual and collaborative problem solving strategies, in a process that encourages the individual to improve the quality of life, increase the efficiency of the social environment, and create spaces that will protect the health, safety and welfare of the public, the Interior Architecture undergraduate program offers students the appropriate instructional learning environment and opportunities.
Basically, the program focuses on the interior design studio and encompasses courses in other subject areas such as history, theory, technology, construction materials, experimental design, environment, and visual communication. The design process places extensive emphasis on design fundamentals, observation, research, spatial development, and the social aspects of space. Also, various electives are included in six semesters to ensure students receive a well-rounded academic base that will enhance both their personal and professional development.
With qualified academic staff, in-curricular and extra-curricular academic activities are carried out in studios, classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and technical trips, and students are offered opportunities to develop competencies related to the interior architecture profession.
In this way, the students gain the ability to use their project-based problem-solving skills to create functional and aesthetic interior designs that will benefit society. When designing their future living environments, they can take into account the traditions, values, and cultural and architectural heritage of different communities, which can create design solutions that can respond to the needs of various cultures and contexts, while also bringing a cultural perspective to environmental studies. By using contemporary technologies and the materials, textures, and colors required by this technology in the design process, they can develop the ability to express these design ideas creatively with various drawing and presentation techniques. They can work in collaboration with different disciplines such as architecture and landscape design by developing multidimensional perspectives in design and practice. Feeling the social and environmental responsibility, they can apply ethical responsibility, aesthetic expression, and practical applications in the dimension of professional standards. There are opportunities for new uses of historical interiors, respecting the architectural and historical heritage, and gaining the ability to use contemporary practices in this context.
Furthermore, the Interior Architecture program provides students with the opportunity of getting a second undergraduate degree (double major) or gaining knowledge in a specific field (minor program) as a student at a different program in addition to Interior Architecture.
Career Areas
Graduates of the Department of Interior Architecture are able to work with different design areas. They can work with infrastructure architects to design the interior of offices. Graduates can also set up their own offices in the construction, furniture, retail sectors, both in the design, marketing, creativity units; and they can show their imagination on preserving historical structures. The courses on furniture and interior architecture are offered with experimental design components, to showcase work, giving students the opportunity to design scenery and places of visual entertainment. There is also a possibility of an academic career in higher education institutions. An interior architect can have a successful career by accurately making use of their human relations and psychology in all aspects of creativity.

Freehand Drawing course is based on perception of objects in indoor or outdoor space, and representation of them by freehand drawing. It is emphasized to understand the nature of natural and man-made objects under the factors such as volume, proportion, light, shadow; and to be able to visualize artistic and figurative expressions of their patterns and textures. The course focuses on the structural properties of objects, geometric forms of different sizes, progressively, with emphasis on strengthening the relationship between eye-brain-hand. It shows students how to use the basic drawing principles such as drawing line, composition and perspective. Besides basic information, students will become familiar with a variety of tools and materials. It is intended to develop free-hand drawing techniques by using lead pencil.

Interior Architecture Basic Design Studio I introduces the elements of basic design such as point, line, plane, and volume to the students. It also includes design principles such as Gestalt principles; abstraction; introduction to principles of composition; expansion; analogy; metaphor; balance; contrast; emphasis; proportion; rhythm; unity and variety. Colors in composition; focal point; position; repetition; sequence; radiation; sense of direction are also studied. The aim of the course is to motivate creativity, hand-eye coordination and artistic perception by focusing on the basics of design elements and design principles. The course aims to equip interior design students with basic drafting techniques in various scales. This includes introduction to drawing equipments, lettering, line types, orthographic projections (plans, elevations and sections) of basic geometrical forms; drawing of interior design plans, sections, elevations, details, and their dimensioning. The knowledge gained in this course helps interior design students communicate their design ideas through various drafting techniques and scales such as site plan and sections, 1/50 and 1/20 presentation drawings where building elements such as doors, windows, staircase drawings, details of sanitary and kitchen equipment shall be included in 1/10, 1/5, 1/2 scales. This course for interior design department students analyzes the human factors, anthropometric data and their impacts on broad aspects of design development. Subjects include systems reliability, sensory and motor processes, basic research techniques and anthropometric studies. It explores ergonomic standards, universal design principles and their application. It aims to introduce static and dynamic dimensions of human body; to develop of the knowledge and awareness of the students about the significance of anthropometry and to improve their ability of applying anthropometric data effectively on design projects. This course for interior design department students is an introduction to trigonometry and analytic geometry in two and three dimensions. Introduction to Construction course covers the load-bearing and non-load-bearing elements of solid load-bearing wall structural system and frame (skeleton) structural system. This course is the continuation of ENG 101. The course aims to improve students' listening, speaking, reading, writing and working skills. In the course, students are guided in writing compare and contrast essays using Venn diagram. In addition, the aim of the course is to learn the necessary conjunctions for composition writing. In addition, the students will be able to write a four-part critical composition by learning the difference between ideas and factual real sentences and how to write the opposing opinion and sentences used to refute it. Thus, the students will be able to distinguish between the compare and contrast essay and discursive essay. Students will also be able to make presentations by using presentation techniques. Rendering and Presentation Technics course aims to build confidence in the observation, sketching and drawing ability of students through the introduction of various rendering and presentation techniques. Interior Architecture Basic Design Studio II course focuses on the composition of forms and interior spaces with the emphasis on their visual expression by considering the conditions of physical environment; space defining elements, thresholds; horizontal and vertical circulation in building and room scales such as stair and ramp design. The abstract and/or real concepts in spatial design process are introduced. The course includes the effects of climate in interior design. The aim of the course covers to create interior spaces for various scales and functions by using basic design elements and principles. This course focuses on giving the student professional skill in graphical presentation of design ideas and concepts through application of knowledge on descriptive geometry methods, oblique projections, isometric and perspective drawings. The course is designed for interior design students to develop their spatial understanding and way of thinking in the process of design. The students will be able to draw Pictorial views of geometric objects in form of plan oblique, elevation oblique, isometry, one-point and two-point perspective used in presentation of student’s projects. This course examines basic areas of language and expression. In the first half of the course, the theoretical approach to language is formed and the spelling rules of the Turkish language are studied. This course provides an orientation to modern Turkish language for foreign students who wish to communicate in this language for their needs. It mainly focuses on the differences between Turkish and English Alphabets, especially the sounds and the letters which are not included in the English alphabet (i.e. Turkish letters ç-ğ-i-ö-ş-ü). In addition, basic grammar and sentence structure forms in Turkish are practised. This course covers the factors which affect the building materials specification (user requirements, building design, soil, environmental factors, cost), the properties, and the basic materials used in building construction. The physical properties of the building materials (density, gravity, porosity, void ratio, conductivity, thermal capacity, fire resistance, etc.); the mechanical properties (loading, hardness, toughness, fatigue); and environmental effects of the building materials (soil, water, air pollution and solid waste) are examined. The environmental effects are considered by Life Cycle Analyses. Natural and artificial timber products, natural stone, bricks, concrete and reinforced concrete, steel and other metals, and glass are covered by the course. The other materials are given as research projects to the students. The subjects are examined according to the architectural and interior design principles.

This course contains the analysis, design and constructional principles of the building elements. In this course, a holistic approach is taken to the hardware of a building of which all structural elements are examined individually previously. The two production processes, which are on site and off site productions, in the construction industry are examined. The conventional way of constructing a building, site organization and management, production stages are covered by on site production. Off site production deals with the prefabricated building systems: prefabricated reinforced concrete panels, frame structures, timber panels and frame structures, steel structures. The target of this course is to enable the students to gain knowledge on the modularization and standardization as well as the work flows in the building production processes and mass productions. The contents of this course cover the technical services and systems within a building. The principles of those systems and their integration with architectural design are examined. In this context heating systems (individual and central heating), heating-ventilation-air-conditioning (HVAC) systems; clean / tap water and sanitary systems; electricity / power and lighting system; fire systems and design solutions (emergency exits, fire stairs, etc.); communication systems (telephone, internet, and television); security systems (alarms, cameras, recording, remote-control, etc.) are covered by the course. The course also includes understanding the deterioration on structures and the underlying reasons and how to make the necessary archive research before starting a restoration project of a historical structure. Summer training I provides to interior design students the ability to understand how the design process works within the construction site and improve of the capability to gain experience to put theoretical knowledge in to practice. The course provides a chronological survey of the works of (western) art from the Renaissance to the second half of the 20th century, including the Baroque, Neoclassicism, Historicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Postimpressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, New Objectivity, Purism, Neo-Plasticism, Suprematism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Post-Modernism. Individual art historical styles, types of works of art, subject matters, iconography, semiotics and techniques are analysed, considering the respective cultural, historical, political and social context. The changing notions of the question “what is art, and what is an artist?” serve as background throughout the course.

"This course gives practical information pertaining to the area of design. It focuses on relations with clients, legal, financial, administrative problems, office organization and so on. This course serves as a forum to discuss and prepares for the concerns of the professional world by guest lecturers. The emphasis is placed on budgeting skills, portfolio preparation, presentation refinement and professional practices, including ethical issues related to the profession. In this course, the students begin to structure their design projects into a cohesive and formal portfolio of work, preparing them for internship and employment opportunities. A variety of photo and digital based printmaking techniques (high and low-tech) will be introduced as alternative means of printing photographic images to present new methods of layering and manipulating images along with and beyond that of traditional photographic and digital printing. The techniques introduced will incorporate textural and hand-drawn elements with an array of multiple-colour and multiple-image layering possibilities. These approaches will be further applied with a focus on the concept and serial image development utilizing an expanded vocabulary of format and presentation. Also, in the course, students are further introduced to computers and software relating to the subject.

TR Students who are successful in the exams conducted by the Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) and are entitled to enroll in our university in line with their preferences can complete the registration process with the necessary documents for registration from our Registration and Liaison Offices throughout Turkey or from the Marketing Directorate on campus.

TRNC Applicants
TRNC citizens and TR citizen candidate students who have completed their entire high school education in TRNC. They are placed in undergraduate programs in line with their success in the CIU Student Placement and Scholarship Ranking Exam and the programs they prefer.
Students who are successful in the exam can register from the TRNC Marketing Office.
Applicants can directly apply online to our undergraduate programs using the application portal. Please fill in your details correctly and upload all the required documents listed on the last page of the application form.
