Brain development is at the highest speed during the first five years of life. All social-emotional, language, psychomotor skills develop very fast during early childhood. Preschool teachers are the most important stakeholders in this period. They do an extraordinary amount of work for the future of our lives and the universe. A high-quality preschool education is one of the utmost gifts we can give to our children. There are 52 core and 7 elective courses to be completed during the undergraduate program. First year student teachers are supposed to complete service courses and as of the second year, students are offered courses that focus on field-specific theories and practices. This program delivers a solid ground for the prospective teachers of 36 – 72 months old children. Department of Pre-school Education offers a wide range of elective courses including: construction of creative toys, child law, early literacy, child and crime, etc. Practice teaching courses are also implemented at the preschools in the area.
Pre-School Teacher Education Program, as an indicator of is quality of education, was accredited and certified by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs (EPDAD), one of the national accreditation organizations, in 2020.
Cyprus International University provides a comprehensive approach to mentor undergraduate students through teaching and research to help them pursue careers addressing the importance of early childhood education. Preschool teachers are supposed to complete three practical courses during the program: Practice Teaching I, Practice Teaching II and School Experience. Since CIU is located very close to other preschools, student teachers can easily access or other educational resources as part of their courses. Students can also have degrees from double major or major/minor program from relevant programs. The preschool club offers both social and academic activities throughout the year. Many remarkable experts from the field give speeches and seminars. Also, workshops and sightseeing tours are organized to build a sense of teamwork, culture, community and pedagogical content knowledge to help students apply these skills and information to their teaching practices.
Preschool teachers are responsible for teaching children between 3 – 6 years old. They can work at public schools of Ministry of National Education, private preschools and any other preschool education related institutions. They can also pursue postgraduate degrees and work at the universities upon completion. Based on earned certificates during their undergraduate, they can also widen their job opportunities to professions such as family support specialists or child development consultants. They also may work on materials and software needed in pre-school education institutions in both written and visual media. Many organizations and associations may also need educators who are specialized on early childhood education for instance childcare centers, hotels, shopping malls. In addition, after school care teaching positions are possible in certain countries.
