Partnerships for the Goals

Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy

The Cyprus International University has a strong relationship with the government and contributes to policy development for sustainable development goals such as clean energy technology.  

Some of the key contributions are as follows: Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu, a representative of the Cyprus International University, is part of the OEÇG “joint energy working group.” The joint energy working group is responsible for policy development for the Ministry of Economy and Energy. Also, renewable energy is included in the group's responsibilities, amongst other areas of energy policies.

The CIU has a representative, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Shefik, on the board of directors of The Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (2022 -current)  

Furthermore, the CIU had a representative on the board of directors of The Chamber of Electrical Engineers (Ministry of Economy and Energy) (2021-2022). The Cyprus International University also had representatives in the Chamber of Electrical Engineers Energy Policy Committee to support the government in developing clean energy policies (2021-2022). 

Additionally, Dr. Gizem Caner is president of the Chamber of Urban Planners. The chamber is responsible for the planning profession in Northern Cyprus. It gathers Urban Planners and Senior Urban Planners authorized to practice their profession and art in Northern Cyprus.  

Asst. Prof. Dr. Nezire Özgece is an active board member of The Chamber of Architects, helping the government with policy development.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Ertan Akgün is an active board member of The Chamber of Architects, helping the government with policy development.  

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sedef Çakır is an active board member of The Chamber of Meteorological Engineers, helping the government with policy development.

Cross sectoral dialogue about SDGs

Cyprus International University organized and participated in many events about sustainability issues involving government and NGOs.

Some of these are listed below;

  • In collaboration with “The Renewable Energy Association”, education regarding Energy Transition, Sustainability, and Climate-Neutral Cities was conducted. 
  • In collaboration with the “Chamber of Environmental Engineers”, education regarding the European Union Green Deal was conducted. 
  • In collaboration with the “Famagusta City Museum Initiative”, a conference about the “City Museum and its Values” regarding the European Union Green Deal was organized. 
  • In collaboration with the “Chamber of Environmental Engineers”, a conference about “Solid Waste Problems in North Cyprus and Solutions” was organized. 
  • In collaboration with “Ministry of National Education and Culture” education events aimed at preschool and primary school teachers are provided.
  • In collaboration with the “Kıbrıs Türk Kızılayı,” a seminar about “Blood Donation Awareness” was organized.

InternatIonal collaboratIon data gatherIng for SDG

One of the most notable international collaborations regarding sustainability issues is with İstanbul Medipol University which includes academic, cultural, and scientific cooperation (See Appendix 1).

Also, in 2021 a cooperation protocol was signed between the Cyprus International University (CIU) Sustainable Energy Research Center (SERC) and the Energy Education-Etud Application and Research Center affiliated with the Osmaniye Korkut Ata University.

Within the protocol that was signed with the aim of collaborating upon scientific studies, education, and technical matters, also aimed is the encouragement or relations between the academicians, researchers, and students across both the centers, presenting the results of the cooperative efforts for common use, and to publish the research. Collaboration for SDG best practice

UI GreenMetric is an initiative of the University of Indonesia developed in 2010. The aim of this initiative is to provide the result of an online survey regarding the current condition and policies related to Green Campuses and Sustainability in Universities all over the world. It is expected that by drawing the attention of university leaders and stakeholders, more attention will be given to combating global climate change, energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation. Such activities will require a change of behavior and providing more attention to the sustainability of the environment, as well as economic and social problems related to sustainability.

Collaboration with NGOs for SDGs

Cyprus International University collaborates with “Cancer Research Foundation” (NGO) and the university provides research scholarships for tackling sustainability-related topics. See the appendix for more details.

Education for SDGs commitment to meaningful education

Cyprus International University (CIU) offers sustainability-related university electives that are available for all students.

Some of these are as below.

  • PNGE4522: Conventional and Alternative Energy Resources
  • PNGE4511: World Energy Policy
  • SGBL322: Health Services in Disasters
  • FTRE220: Exercise for Health

Furthermore, the university integrates sustainability education into the full curriculum as well. Sustainability concepts are part of our CIU Quality Values and CIU Quality Outcomes (See Quality Value 8 and see Quality Outcome 9).

Education for SDGs specific courses on sustainability

CIU offers sustainability related full degrees where one of the most notable one is Energy Systems Engineering.

CIU also offers sustainability related courses such as ENRE402 (Environmental of energy systems) which provides knowledge on environmental impacts and environmental impact assessment. Some of the other example courses are Wind energy technology (ENRE312), Solar energy technology (ENRE311), Conventional and alternative energy resources (PNGE412), and Energy auditing (ENRE315).

Education for SDGs in the wider community

CIU offered many free sustainability-related educational opportunities for the local community. Some of which can be seen in the posters below.

Furthermore, some of these events are held online or streamed online as well through zoom and shared using our alumni portal for those who are graduated from our university and are interested in sustainability-related issues and concepts.
